March 2016 saw the launch of one of the largest projects for structural transition in the Ruhr region, the "InnovationCity roll out". The “InnovationCity“ model has been tested successfully in Bottrop for the last five years and is now set to be transferred to the Ruhr region as a whole. The project will see a holistic district development of 20 selected urban districts in the Ruhr metropolitan area, following the example of the “InnovationCity Ruhr | Modellstadt Bottrop”.

Here is the overview of the selected districts:

•    Castrop-Rauxel, left and right of the Emscher
•    Dorsten, Wulfen-Barkenberg
•    Dortmund, Westerfilde/Bodelschwingh
•    Gelsenkirchen, Rotthausen-West
•    Gladbeck, Rentfort-Nord and centre
•    Hamm, Bergwerk-Ost/Pelkum and Wilhelmstraße
•    Herne, centre/Altenhöfen
•    Herten, Langenbochum/Paschenberg
•    Lünen Süd
•    Moers, Bergarbeitersiedlung-Meerbeck
•    Mülheim an der Ruhr, Dümpten and centre
•    Oberhausen, Osterfeld-Mitte/Vondern
•    Oer-Erkenschwick, Groß-Erkenschwick
•    Recklinghausen, Hillerheide

In the scope of the competition to participate in the InnovationCity roll out Business Metropole Ruhr GmbH advised 40 percent of the municipalities in the selection and description of their districts, thus supporting them in the submission of their applications.
The work involved in the application also applies for the subsequent work on site in the districts: With the aid of the BMR data for the demarcation and description of some 2000 districts in the Ruhr metropolitan area municipalities have a fast and convenient basis with which to begin the selection and conception of renovation projects in their urban districts.
