Neue Mitte Oberhausen

Over 20 years ago saw the opening of the Centro on the former industrial site of the Gutenhoffnungshütte metallurgical plant and Thyssen. Today, over 220 retail businesses with a sales area of some 120,000 square metres make the Centro one of the largest shopping and leisure centres in Europe. Around 23 million visitors are recorded here each year. Since then a lot has changed on the former colliery site on the Rhein-Herne Canal, easily reached via the A2, A3, A42 and the A516 autobahns. The so-called Neue Mitte Oberhausen has developed around the Centro, with attractive office and commercial sites and a range of tourist attractions. Draws such as the Sea Life Aquarium, Legoland Discovery Centre, the Stage Metronom Theater and König-Pilsener-Arena with its 12,500 seats join with the impressive sites of industrial culture such as the Gasometer or the former GHH main warehouse by Bauhaus architect Peter Behrens to form an attractive symbiosis.

In the direct vicinity of the Centro, on the site of the former steelworks, now the BusinessParkO., the Northern Irish company Euro Auctions Immobilien GmbH is successfully marketing sites in co-operation with the Bocholt-based firm Giesers Stahlbau GmbH. Landgard Blumen und Pflanzen, Engelbert Strauss Berufsbekleidung, B&B Hotel, Super8 Hotel, Poco Einrichtungshaus, Hornbach Baumarkt, The Ash, L‘Osteria and RENTABOX24 are just some of the firms that have located here. XXXLutz and Decathlon have already concluded letters of intent. The development of this site in particular reflects the structural transformation of the region from an industrial location to a trading and services metropolis. It is also evident here that this can occur in unison with research and environmental projects: The Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT has just expanded its research operations at the Oberhausen site. With the renaturation of the upper reaches of the Läppkes Mühlenbach watercourse in recent years the Emschergenossenschaft co-operative has laid the foundations for the “new Emscher valley”. At the BusinessParkO., together with its direct environs on Osterfelder Straße and at Marina Oberhausen further attractive, fully-developed sites are available for office and trade use in the Neue Mitte Oberhausen.
