The growth region Ruhr Metropolis
at the international real estate fair
“The Ruhr Metropolis has finally emerged from the shadow of the Rhineland as far as investors are concerned. The presence of six towns and cities and their mayors at the MIPIM and an investment volume that recently topped 3.5 billion euros show that we are capable of continuing to build on our success,” stated Rasmus C. Beck, Managing Director (Chairman) of Business Metropole Ruhr GmbH (BMR).
A residential and commercial centre on 1,700 hectares at the heart of Germany’s largest conurbation, a new urban quarter for start-ups at Europe’s biggest canal port and living and working on 60 hectares of the best waterfront. These and further exciting projects are being jointly presented by the mayors of Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen and Herne at the international MIPIM real estate exhibition in Cannes from 12 to 16 March. The BMR organised the joint presence in Cannes for the Ruhr Metropolis.
This year, for the 30th time MIPIM connects investors, cities, brokers or city planners from all over the world. Since 1990, the trade fair has continued to grow, not least because the real estate business has not only become a strong economic factor, but also because it is central to urban development. This year, more than 26,000 representatives from companies and politics from all over the world registered. Some 500 journalists will report on the four-day event, especially on the projects presented here.
Sites for industry and trade
In Dortmund new quarters are arising in the north of the city that will offer new perspectives to the growing knowledge and start-up location. For mayor Ullrich Sierau this is the logical continuation of the long-term urban planning strategy: "The success of the Dortmund model with the most successful technology park in Europe lies in the fact that since the 1980s we have regarded technology, sites, science, academia, companies and new employment for all as a single entity. Our new innovation quarters di-port and Emscher Nordwärts can therefore be regarded as start-up centres and technology centres for energy and digitalisation. They are trade parks for cross-sectoral urban production. The truth is: everything applies.”read more
A complete new urban district is taking shape in Duisburg, on the southern city limits with Düsseldorf. 6-Seen-Wedau will offer 60 hectares of residential and work space in prime waterfront sites, in direct proximity to the university. “6-Seen-Wedau is a unique project that will exert a draw far beyond the city itself. A completely new district is being built here, featuring good, affordable housing for many young families. We are very proud of this flagship project and of the milestones that we have achieved in recent months together with our partners,” says mayor Sören Link.read more
Bochum, for example, offers what is currently the largest contiguous inner city marketing site in the Ruhr Metropolis. Industry, trade, commerce and services are taking shape on the 45.5-hectare location.
“In the area of the TechnologieCampus along Wittener Straße and around the planned O-Werk in particular, MARK 51°7 offers proximity to modern research and teaching facilities and the opportunity to interact continuously with science and academia, to the mutual benefit of all,” says mayor Thomas Eiskirch.
More than 20 years ago, the Centro was opened on former industrial sites. 120,000 square metres of sales area and 23 million visitors make it one of the largest shopping and leisure centres in Europe.
The development reflects the structural change of the region from an industrial location to a trade and service metropolis. This is done in harmony with research and environmental projects: The Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT has just expanded its research areas at the Oberhausen location. The Emschergenossenschaft has laid the foundation stone for the "New Emscher Valley". In the BusinessParkO. as well as at the Osterfelder Straße and at the Marina Oberhausen, further attractive fully developed areas are available for offices and businesses in the Neue Mitte Oberhausen.
1,700 hectares of freedom
Three new quarters are currently planned in Essen. With the Freiheit Emscher project mayor Thomas Kufen is joining forces with Bottrop and RAG Montan to transform 1,700 hectares into a new centre for housing and businesses. “As a future-capable city in the heart of Europe, Essen is an excellent business location. This is evident in the major companies as well as the strong medium-sized enterprises, increasing numbers of start-ups and a vibrant university scene. Essen is a city in transition. Clear indicators of this can be seen in new quarters and construction projects. The ‘Essen 51.’, ‘Freiheit Emscher’ and ‘Literatur Quartier’ projects are excellent examples of this."read more
In Cannes Herne is primarily highlighting the revitalisation of the former General Blumenthal 11 mining site. The central location totalling 81 hectares features up to 15 hectares of commercial space: “The site is the largest contiguous available space in Herne.
