Facts & Figures

Lead market Healthcare

The leading market of Healthcare also recorded markedly positive economic figures in 2017. With a share of 19.4 % in total employment, the healthcare sector is the most important leading market in the Ruhr Metropolis from an employment policy viewpoint.

Measured by the number of employees, the largest sub-markets in healthcare in the Ruhr region include in-patient and out-patient care as well as services in healthcare-relevant trading and sport, social services and caring. The growth dynamic in the leading market is noticeably stronger than in the federal (+2.3 %) and state comparison (+2.2 %).

The two high-employment sub-markets of in-patient and out-patient care and healthcare-relevant services act as key engines for employment growth. Regional specialisations are found, for example, in Herne, Gelsenkirchen, Recklinghausen, Bottrop and Hamm.

Overall, the Ruhr Metropolis healthcare market numbers 6,688 companies. This number increased slightly during the period of evaluation (+0.5 %). However, it did not prove possible to emulate the positive turnover development of the previous year. The marked decline (-6.5 %) is due in particular to negative developments in in-patient and out-patient care as well as healthcare-relevant services.

In spite of the turnover deficit, the signs are good for the development of the Healthcare leading market. The demographic transition and increased social awareness of healthcare are leading to increased demand for healthcare products and services. In the course of digitalisation (E-Health) and the opportunities presented by big data, new, innovative business models are arising for customer-individual products and services.
