Bochum has reinvented itself: the flourishing 19th century metropolis of mining and steelmaking has been transformed in recent decades into a modern, vibrant business and service location with a high recreational value. Today, the economic profile of the city on the Ruhr is characterised by IT and IT security, healthcare and production with a focus on engineering and automotive.
Over 364,000 people live in Bochum, the heart of the central Ruhr region. Of these, approximately 6,000 women and men are employed in the fields of science, research and administration. With around 60,000 students, Bochum is the second largest university location in NRW. Bochum is in the top ten for Germany as a whole.
Two universities and four universities of applied sciences, the Folkwang University of the Arts and numerous scientific institutes and centres of technology form the impressive academic landscape of Bochum, underscoring the transition of the city to a modern knowledge-based society.

In the shadow of the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, the Innenstadt West - western city centre - site with its direct proximity to Bochum city centre is one of the most important locations with the greatest potential in the Ruhr region.
Here a 35 ha former industrial site is being redeveloped with a future-oriented approach. An attractive combination of business, trade, culture and leisure is the goal of the project.
