Sports activities in the Metropole Ruhr

Sport - especially football - brings a real kick to the region. The region's enthusiasm for football is reflected in the number of clubs playing in the Bundesliga and division two. The football stadiums of Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 are top international addresses and amongst the largest and most modern stadiums in the world. Both arenas hosted matches during the World Cup finals in 2006.

- Europe's largest covered shooting site in Dortmund
- the beach volleyball centre at the Kemnader reservoir
- the Alpine Centre indoor ski piste in Bottrop
- the specially designed climbing wall at the North Duisburg landscape park
- the flooded gasometer for scuba divers in the North Duisburg landscape park

- 5,536 sports clubs with 1.3 million members
