Hünxe has five general education schools; secondary and vocational schools in the neighbouring municipalities and an adult education centre. In close proximity to the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Both locals and visitors alike appreciate Hünxe's Otto Pankok Museum, the Museum of Local History, the historic churches and manor houses. Also worth a visit are Gartrop castle (14th century), including water mill, and Haus Schwarzenstein, a medieval knight’s manor dating from the same century. Nearby are the Krudenburg historic towing community on the river Lippe and the water mills in Bruckhausen and Gartrop-Bühl.
Active leisure options include seven nature reserves, three sports centres, an indoor swimming pool, riding paths, tennis courts, golf courses and squash courts. Gliding and surfing enthusiasts are also catered for and nature fans can enjoy 187 kilometres of hiking trails, ten marked cycle routes, the NiederRhein route and the Roman route.
