Herten

innovative and future-oriented

Herten with its population of approximately 65,000 on an area of around 37.31 square kilometres is a secondary centre in the Recklinghausen district. It is situated in the northern Ruhr district in close proximity to the towns of Recklinghausen and Gelsenkirchen and can be reached via the A43, A2 and A42 autobahns. The technology centre, redesigned slagheaps, industrial monuments and the ‘Glass House’ lead the way in architectural terms and stand for Herten’s future-oriented attitude. Its excellent external infrastructure provides a wide range of industrial logistics advantages. The Haard and Hohe Mark local recreation areas and the Münsterland region are only a short drive away, making Herten an ideal town to live and work in.

Economy

[+]

A strong service sector, solid trade businesses, an attractive retail structure and renowned manufacturing companies, such as Coca-Cola and Herta characterise Herten’s successful mix of economic sectors. Herten’s economic activities are concentrated mainly on the waste disposal and environmental sectors, the town having seized early on the opportunities offered by the environmental technology industry. In the New Energies sector, Herten has increasingly relied on hydrogen technologies.

ZukunftsZentrum Herten

[+]

The ZukunftsZentrum Herten future centre (ZZH) with the adjoining technology park provides space for the settling of new innovative companies. The ZZH features offices, laboratories, shop floors, bioengineering facilities and conference rooms, and an office and reception service. The mix of businesses among the approximately thirty companies at the ZZH provides a cooperative environment for the realization of new ideas.

Business development projects

[+]

Herten’s business development specifically supports the Ewald project, hydrogen technology development, and the Last Mile Logistics project.
The Ewald Project is considered one of the region’s outstanding future-oriented locations which covers around 50 hectares and features an excellent infrastructure with direct access to the A2 (Antwerp – Ruhr – Berlin - Warsaw), A42 and A43 autobahns. The project’s special focus centres on the H2 Herten Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, together with the new technologies sector. Excellent urban development and landscape architecture concepts have been developed under the headings of ‘Land Strata’ and ‘New Horizons’, which make the Ewald Project a future-oriented location on a European level. The Ewald Project office supplies on-site information about the project as a whole, advisory services for interested companies, supporting them in approval procedures and until they have settled at the site.

Its H2 Herten Hydrogen Centre of Excellence has ensured Herten’s international position in one of the central future-oriented sectors, establishing the town as a technology location on a supraregional level. Herten has participated in the European HyChain-Minitrans project, a pilot project launched by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Transport and Energy with the aim of proving the suitability for daily use of vehicles with fuel cells.
Together with the towns of Gelsenkirchen and Herne, Herten is also a member of the intermunicipal logistics initiative, last mile logistik netzwerk GmbH. An area of 170 hectares is being developed to attract logistics companies which specialise in the regional, national and international dispersion of commodities. The town of Herten has available an excellently situated 40-hectare site, the only one with its own railway link.

Living in Herten

[+]

Herten is a town of many facets: cultural and historical buildings, such as the moated castle and the Old Village in Herten-Westerholt, considered as the Westphalian Rothenburg, industrial monuments, extensive forests and meadows, including the Scherlebeck asparagus village. In addition, redesigned slagheaps such as the Hoheward, the CopaCaBackum baths with their swimming, sauna and spa facilities and Herten’s Glass House with its nationally acclaimed library. To put it in a nutshell: Herten provides not only excellent working conditions, but is also an ideal town to live in, not least thanks to innovative residential concepts, such as the child-friendly design of residential areas and the elegant Waldviertel district which meets even the most upmarket requirements.
