Herdecke

half-timbered town on the water

“A historic place, and a charming modern town with excellent future prospects.” This is the first line in a Herdecke town brochure from twenty years ago. These words continue to apply and have become more topical than ever before.

Herdecke, a town in the Ennepe-Ruhr region with a population of 26,000 and situated only a few kilometres from the industrial conurbations of the Ruhr district, has grown into a community which few would expect to find in this region.
Herdecke is no longer a ‘sleepy village’, as people who have never been here may be inclined to think.

A city atmosphere

[+]

The homogeneously grown town structure, charming half-timbered houses and well-kept gardens attract a large number of visitors and are the pride of the local population. Extensive water areas surrounding the Harkort and Hengstey lakes, a comprehensive network of cycling paths along the Ruhr and spacious forests provide a wide range of sports and leisure facilities.

Herdecke is a modern production management centre with a sound population structure and its own identity. A town without frills, featuring traces of its past, with an eye for what the future requires.

Herdecke is characterised not by gigantism and superlatives, but by modesty and restraint.

An increasing number of visitors from the surrounding conurbations have come to value and love this mix of pleasant tranquillity and modern city atmosphere.
