Haltern am See can be reached via the A43 autobahn with two exits on Haltern’s municipal area (the Haltern and Lavesum exits), the A52 (exit Marl-Nord) and the B58 national road and L551 country road, which link the town in east-westerly and north-southerly directions. The town is situated on the Wesel-Datteln canal and the Essen-Münster railway.
The town is traditionally characterised by agriculture and forestry, commerce, the retail trade and the leisure and services industries - a combination which ensures a balanced economic structure.
