Ennepetal with its population of 33,000 was founded on 1 April 1949 and is a relatively young town. It is assumed that its two predecessors, the municipalities of Milspe and Voerde, which joined to form the town of Ennepetal, existed as early as 800 AD. Their fusion has helped the two up-and-coming industrial communities to jointly perform a wide range of municipal duties. Over the years, the industrial location, formerly characterised by hammer mills and steel processing plants, has turned into a youthful, contemporary town.
Ennepetal's mix of traditional sectors and future-oriented businesses has created a sound structure, and the head offices of global enterprises such as DORMA GmbH & Co. KG (locking systems, among others), Altenloh, Brinck & Co. GmbH & Co. KG (SPAX screws, among others) and ThyssenKrupp Bilstein Suspension GmbH (shock absorbers, among others) are based in Ennepetal.
