Datteln

a modern industrial and services location... at the intersection of four canals

Datteln is situated at the intersection of the Dortmund-Ems, Datteln-Hamm, Wesel-Datteln and Rhine-Herne canals. These four canals link the town to all important economic regions in Germany and Europe, making Datteln Europe's most important canal intersection.

... at the intersection of two autobahns

Intersections linking Datteln to the A2 Hanover-Oberhausen and A45 Dortmund-Aschaffenburg autobahns are only a few kilometres beyond Datteln's borders, and the B235 national road links Datteln to the southern Münsterland and Ruhr district. 56 million people can be reached from Datteln by autobahn within three hours.

... at the border of the Ruhr district and Münsterland region

Datteln combines the advantages of the Ruhr district and Münsterland region. An excellent infrastructure allows easy access to a wide range of cultural, education and shopping facilities. The attractive surrounding countryside is ideal for outdoor sports and leisure activities (such as cycling, hiking, motorboat sports).

.... with a very special industrial park project

The town of Datteln is planning a large industrial area to attract major companies with future-oriented products and production methods. The Lippetal industrial park will link Datteln via the B 747 national road to an extensive road, canal and railway network. Optimised location conditions (such as an attractive atmosphere, a personnel service pool, short approval procedures etc.) will be provided in the newPark, creating several thousand jobs.

A centre of excellence for the construction and construction materials industries

The construction and construction materials industries are Datteln's strongest

economic sectors and concentrate on the following fields:
Zinc: Datteln has one of the most modern zinc electrolysis facilities, producing high-purity zinc, which is processed into zinc plate and zinc for construction purposes. Buildings all over the world are clad or roofed with zinc from Datteln.

Construction chemistry:
One of Europe's most successful construction chemistry brands operates a subsidiary in Datteln. Its products are used in a wide range of sealing and insulation systems, particularly in the building and land redevelopment sectors.

Plastics for the construction industry: Datteln-based companies produce top-quality plastic pipes for underfloor heating and drinking water installations.

Building security installations: Fence systems, gates and barriers to protect buildings are manufactured in Datteln.

Great potential in the health and leisure industries

The St. Vincenz hospital and the Vestische clinic for children and adolescents make Datteln an important medical location in the Ruhr district. The Vestische clinic for children and adolescents is a nationally recognised university clinic which links pure and applied medicine and is one of Germany's leading children's clinics. The institute for paediatric pain therapy and paediatric palliative medicine was opened in 2004 and is the only one of its kind in Germany.

Alongside the big hospitals, private health service providers with innovative concepts based on inter-sector cooperation, integrative supply concepts and R&D have been successful in Datteln.

To promote the development of the leisure industry in Datteln, the town is planning a new district, the Emscher-Lippe water town, on a 35-hectare former mining and coking site between the town centre and the Dortmund-Ems canal. The water town which will combine waterfront residential areas, water sports-oriented retail outlets and businesses, facilities for leisure and recreation, a hotel, and a pleasure boat marina.

An excellent logistics location

56 million people can be reached from Datteln by autobahn within three hours, a figure unattainable elsewhere in Europe. This makes Datteln an ideal location for commercial and storage businesses and logistics companies. A number of major distribution centres has been established in Datteln.

A powerful location

Datteln is a powerful location. Since 1964, E.ON Kraftwerke GmbH has been operating a coal-fired power station for the production of power and heat (net capacity 303 MW) in Datteln on the western bank of the Dortmund-Ems canal. E.ON has decided to replace this plant by a new coal-fired power plant providing 1,055 MW of electrical power on the opposite bank of the canal, investing 1.2 billion euros in this industrial location. The plant's standard corresponds to the parameters set by the Reference Power Plant NRW study. In addition, several Datteln-based industrial and commercial companies have developed new markets in the sectors of renewable technologies (such as solar thermal power plants and photovoltaics).
