Bönen

quality of life for families

The municipality of Bönen with its population of almost 20,000 is part of the district of Unna. It is ideally connected to the conurbation of the eastern Ruhr district and the Münsterland and Sauerland regions.
With its new slogan ‘Progress through Tradition’, thought up by the town's population as part of the discussion on a new vision statement, Bönen has successfully made the transition from a mining location to an attractive and lively community. New residential areas provide housing especially for young families.
Three primary schools, one secondary school, one comprehensive school and a grammar school provide excellent education facilities for children and young people living in Bönen. The town's centre features an inviting pedestrian zone with a wide variety of shops. A large number of cultural and sports facilities and sports and special-interest clubs round off Bönen's attractive leisure activities, its surrounding areas also featuring a wide range of attractions.

Economic location

[+]

Bönen is situated in the district of Unna, one on the region's up and coming economic locations. Recent structural transformations have given the whole region an economic boost.
The economic activities of the former mining and steel region are concentrated mainly in the sectors of logistics, trade, metal, biotechnology, engineering and environmental economics. Bönen's 136 hectare trading and industrial zone, Am Mersch, has been developed and promoted by the Economic Development Agency for the district of Unna in cooperation with the town of Bönen. Following the closure of the Königsborn III/IV mine in 1982, which lost Bönen around 2,800 jobs, the area was redesigned to fulfil modern business requirements and has become a sought-after site for cargo handling and logistics services, as these figures confirm: on 1 July 2005, 3,868 people were employed in the Am Mersch trading and industrial estate, 208 of them as apprentices.
Convenient access to the A2 autobahn is one reason why the majority of sites is no longer available. The Am Mersch commercial and trading estate has nationwide significance and represents the state-of-the-art in industrial facilities, with Woolworth, WestfaliaSurge, Welser, KiK, Zurbrüggen, Pharmlog and Stahlhandel Becker, as well as smaller, innovative businesses, ensuring that Bönen will continue to be able to constantly improve its infrastructure. The launch of the Bio-Security centre of excellence for research companies in the foods sector and the expansion of the container terminal are two more milestones in Bönen's economic history.
